A life of service, a lasting legacy: Fort Buchanan remembers Albit Esteves Quiñones

FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Servicemembers, civilian employees, family members and colleagues gathered Sept. 23 at the Fort Buchanan Chapel to honor the life of Army veteran and longtime Fort Buchanan employee Albit Esteves Quiñones, remembering a career defined by service, leadership and a commitment to protecting others.

For nearly three decades, Esteves Quiñones served his country and community as a Soldier and Department of War civilian.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he continued his federal service and eventually returned home to Puerto Rico, where he built a career at Fort Buchanan that included security, law enforcement and physical security.

His professional progression reflected that commitment. Esteves Quiñones served as a security assistant before becoming a police officer and later a sergeant. Most recently, he served as a physical security specialist and acting chief of physical security, helping oversee operations essential to protecting the Army’s home in the Caribbean, its workforce and military community.

But colleagues remembered more than his positions and responsibilities. They remembered a leader, mentor and friend whose experience, professionalism and willingness to support others strengthened the Directorate of Emergency Services and left a lasting impression on those who served alongside him.

Ulises Marrero, Fort Buchanan’s acting garrison manager, recognized the support the community shown to Esteves Quiñones’ family during the ceremony.

“Your presence, support and solidarity brought comfort to his family and the community and truly reflected the respect and admiration we all hold for him,” Marrero said.

The Religious Support Office; Directorate of Emergency Services; Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security; Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation; and the Puerto Rico National Guard supported the ceremony.

As family members, friends and colleagues gathered to remember Esteves Quiñones, the ceremony honored not only the years he gave in service, but also the relationships he built and the impact he left on the Fort Buchanan community.
